Since it's gone more mainstream, I've started using nothing but natural lump charcoal. Usually made of mesquite I think. I've been buying Experts Choice in 6 lb bags at HEB but as it's popularity has increased, so has the price. Going from about $4 to about $6. Now this is at the HEB on Wooded Acres in Waco. I stopped at the HEB in Bellmead after work yesterday and found this charcoal called El Arriero. Natural lump...6 lbs...$2.77. Now the HEB in Bellmead is the only place I've seen this charcoal. Same damn thing as the other stuff. The chunks are even bigger which for me is a better value. The tiny pieces just burn up in about an hour, these burn forever. Usually 3 6lb bags will get me through a brisket. The wood is only a source of flavor but it does yield quite a bit of heat at the same time. I've kind of learned how to stretch out my charcoal without using too much wood at the same time.

Brian: The next time you go to HEB, pick up a 10 lb. bag of the HEB brand lump charcoal. I have been using it for a few months and really like it. It gets hotter quicker in my chimney and seems to last a lot longer than the Cowboy or B&B brand.
